ICELAND: Traditional turf houses

While driving on Iceland roads you can find many traditional turf houses. They were the product of a difficult climate and offering superior insulation. The common Icelandic turf house would have a large foundation made of flat stones. Upon this was built a wooden frame which would hold the load of the turf.


Med vožnjo po cestah na Islandiji lahko občudujemo mnogo islandskih tradicionalnih hiš, ki so pokrite s travo. V primerjavi z običajno gradnjo, so hiše nudile popolno izolacijo, ki je kljubovala težkim klimatskim razmeram. Hiša ima temelje iz kamna, osrednji del je lesen, a še vedno obložen s kamni. Celotna streha in obok hiše je na vrhu debelo obložena s travo.
